What is a foraging tour, exactly?

A foraging tour has a rhythm of its own — slower than everyday life, tuned to the calm only nature can give. We meet at a quiet spot far from cars, shops and the buzz of life, open with a short game that lands us in the here-and-now, and set out: learning the local flora, stopping beside plants, trees and shrubs, looking closely, tasting, learning which plants heal and which are poisonous. Slowly our basket fills with the plants that will become our lunch — and suddenly the wild greens we pass every day are given a face, a shape and a name.

The walk ends at a hidden corner where a lit campfire, hot tea and coffee are waiting. We rest, then cook lunch together — a generous field feast of seasonal wild plants plus additions I bring along. Cooking around the fire is when people open up: everyone takes part, children included, and dish by dish a meal appears on the mat, rich in color, flavor and health. The meals are vegetarian, with many fully vegan dishes — I haven’t touched meat in over a decade, so my tours are meat-free. We learn to use what grows around us, always protecting nature and treating it with deep respect.

Special foraging workshops in the spirit of nature

A foraging tour is an invitation to take a deep breath, set the day’s worries aside and move at a different, slower pace, focused on the earth — arriving at one of the most magical corners of Israel, under the oak trees. I hold the workshops around Hararit in the Galilee, in small, intimate groups. They suit children as well as grown-ups who are children at heart, and the meals served at the end are vegetarian or vegan — so kosher-observant guests are welcome too.

A foraging event for your celebration

Celebrating something special? Celebrate it in nature — a foraging tour and an unforgettable meal around the campfire. Foraging doesn’t just bring people closer to nature; it brings them closer to each other, and by the end of a tour there is almost always a new sense of closeness in the group. It fits a birthday for someone you love, a team day, a bachelorette party, a company event — or simply a beautiful excuse to meet outdoors and celebrate life.

Tours can be tailored to a specific occasion — team-building days, kibbutzim and communities, birthdays, anniversaries and more — and can be arranged almost anywhere in Israel: nearly every town has wild spaces full of edible and medicinal plants growing right under our noses.

Why Hararit — and can tours happen elsewhere?

I live in Hararit, and it’s my playground. It isn’t a touristy place, so we get quiet and intimacy all to ourselves. We open the tour with a lookout over the Sea of Galilee spread out below in full glory, then pass the forest cabin of the nuns who live there — a place human hands haven’t spoiled — and I take you to spots so full of wild plants that we can gather freely, without worry. I’ve been foraging this area for years and still discover new plants and hidden corners every single time.

I’m also happy to arrange a foraging tour near your home, or anywhere else we choose together — I’m open to new adventures, and Israel is full of special places.

Are foraging tours good for kids?

On a tour in my own village, a four-year-old stayed glued to my side — listening, tasting, simply present, the way children know how to be. A few days later his mother told me they went hiking and he showed them the plants we had learned, explaining each one from his own point of view. I love having children on my tours: even when they don’t catch every word, they are present in nature, away from screens, making discoveries — a praying-mantis egg case, ants that farm, and more. Nature is endless magic for children, and a foraging tour opens a window straight into it.

Foraging Tours — Questions & Answers

Usually an hour and a half to two hours; with field cooking and a full meal around the campfire — three to four hours.

Mostly a smile and dancing taste buds. Everything else — equipment, ingredients and the campfire — is on me.

Very much so. Children are present in nature in their own way — off screens, tasting, discovering praying-mantis egg cases and farmer ants. A foraging tour opens that window for them.

Yes — vegetarian with many fully vegan dishes; I have not touched meat in over a decade, which also makes the meals kosher-friendly.

Of course. Before every tour I check allergies and preferences and build the menu so it suits everyone.

Yes — tours run in Hebrew and English. Tourists, new immigrants and English-speaking groups are very welcome.

My home base is Hararit in the Galilee — quiet, untouristy, overlooking the Sea of Galilee — but tours can be arranged almost anywhere in Israel.

Yes, within the rules: reasonable amounts for personal use, no protected species, and no picking inside nature reserves and national parks. We learn exactly what is allowed on the tour.

The iron rule: identify with complete certainty first — only then taste. On the tour you learn each plant by several features, including its dangerous look-alikes.
